Unscripted Cuba: A Morning Walk Turned Memory

We set out at dawn to hike through Valle de Dos Hermanas. After a few days of driving, we were ready for beautiful views and fresh air. What we got was something far more layered.

As the sun began to break through the misty valley, we came across a small ecological farm tucked into the hillside. The farmer welcomed us warmly and walked us through his garden rows, proudly sharing what he grows for his farm-to-table restaurant. We didn’t stay to eat—it was still early—but he picked herbs and fruit straight from the earth for us to taste. The flavors were vibrant, untouched. The kind of freshness that doesn’t come in packaging. If you’ve been to Cuba, you will know that this kind of produce is a rare find. Most of the population is limited to peas, carrots, cabbage and potatoes.

As the day continued, without expecting it, the sky darkened and rain began to fall. We found ourselves stuck.. and by chance in one of the most beautiful gardens I’ve ever seen—lush, peaceful, and dotted with books. There was no power, no signal, and no rush. Just time. We sat for hours as the rain poured around us, caught in a moment that felt both completely still and deeply alive.

By chance, guests who had been staying in the guest house had prepared a taxi the day prior. Without phone service, we sent word for them to please send a taxi back for us.. and hoped for the best. When I see these videos, I remember that moment fondly— lost among the plants, the silence, the taste of something real.

It reminded me of a slower life I used to know—before notifications, before urgency, before everything became so immediate. A reminder that some of the best days are the ones you couldn’t have planned.
